"At the same time, it is quite likely
that their graduates command even higher starting salaries
than the mentioned Georgia Tech graduates," said
Kochut, referring to the $16,000 to $33,000 disparity
in salaries, according to the 2002-03 graduate surveys
from both universities.
"I don't believe that the difference
in starting salaries can be attributed to the fact that
Georgia Tech has an accredited program in computer science
and the University of Georgia does not," he said.
"Professional accreditation only
gets your resume noticed," said David Boardman,
New Media Institute venture catalyst, about hiring from
accredited or non-accredited programs.
"There are three values that I always
look for when hiring -- passion, values and style."
Boardman hired close to 100 professionals
when working at Hewlett-Packard a few years ago. He
said most hiring agents and computer science companies
have a short list of schools or brands they will hire
from.
"Most students think of the brand
schools and the cr?me of the crop apply to those schools,"
Boardman said. "A higher level of student applies
to those brand schools and the companies know this."
"Most computer science companies
won't find it worthwhile to recruit on campus, because
they only hire one employee every two years," said
Leslie Seuser, a Terry College of Business career consultant.
Seuser said larger non-computer science
firms hire most of the University's computer science
graduates.
